Rock Climbing
The aim of the climbing program is to teach basic skills, develop self-confidence, and make the activity more accessible to members of the Georgetown community. To fulfill this goal, we offer a number of activities:
Basic Climbing: One-day outdoor climbing clinics held at the nearby cliffs of Carderock, Maryland and Great Falls, Virginia. We will teach knots, belaying, movement over rock, and safety issues. This trip is ideal for people new to climbing, or those who have not climbing for a while. Gear provided.
Top-Rope Anchor construction: Weekend trip held at Annapolis Rock, near the Appalachian Trail in Maryland. Instruction will focus on building removable top rope systems and may include more advanced climbing skills, fixed line ascension, and belay escapes. This course is meant for participants who have some prior experience and is taught by Adventure Schools who also teach some of our Basic Skills days. Gear provided.
Indoor Climbing: Weekly trips to the nearby rock gym Sport Rock led by rock instructors. Rental gear is available through Outdoor Education office.
Rock Instructor training: For those students with significant experience climbing and a desire to share that knowledge there are positions with Outdoor Ed. as climbing instructors. Training will include Van Safety, Belay teaching tips, basic & advanced movement skills, and mock leading. Among the benefits for these rock instructors are subsidized memberships to the climbing gym.
